About the app

Memory Drop is an app for revisiting photos from the same month and day in past years — "On This Day." This day last year, two years ago, and further back. Combine the era with filters like place, people, and pets to narrow down your memories.

Photos, Live Photos, and videos are read on your device and never sent anywhere. There are no ads or tracking.

Main features

🍃On This Day

Photos from the same date in past years gently fall from above, pile up, and scatter. On days with many photos, it automatically switches to a "rain of memories."

🖼️Full view

Tap again for full view. Swipe left or right for the next photo, swipe down to go back. Live Photos and videos play right there.

🗓️Filter by era and conditions

Combine eras — last year, two years ago, earlier, or by specific year — with place, people, pets, landmarks, and favorites to filter (multiple selections allowed).

🏔️Favorites and notes

Add a treasured photo to Favorites. You can leave notes too. Both are managed within this app, separate from the Photos app's favorites.

🏷️Naming people & pets

Give the people and pets in your photos any name you like, within the app. Names aren't written back to your photo library, and can be used for filtering and sharing.

📍Place & landmarks

From a photo's location, it gently estimates an area name or phrases like "near the aquarium." It doesn't assert shop names (and can be turned off in settings).

💞Share preview

Always preview before sharing. Choose whether to show the date, place, landmark, people's names, pet names, and notes, then send via the standard iOS share sheet.

🪟Widgets

Supports the Home Screen (small: one photo from this day / medium & large: photos from this day) and the Lock Screen. You can choose the era, and tapping opens that photo.

💾Storage management

Check what the app has stored and clean up old full-resolution copies, temporary images, and caches. Your favorites, notes, and exclusion settings are kept.

✨Demo mode and Lite mode

Demo mode lets you try the app without photo access. If it runs slowly or unstably, switch to Lite mode, which reduces effects and prefetching.

Tips for using the app

Start with the demo — We don't ask for photo access on first launch. You can experience "On This Day" in demo mode (also available anytime from settings).
Start with your photos — Only when you choose "Start with my photos" from the demo do we ask for photo access.
Works with limited access — It works with only the photos you select. Use "Add photos" to add more later.
Full view controls — Tap a card again (or press and hold) for full view. Swipe left/right to move through, swipe down to go back.
Favorites — From full view, choose "Add to Favorites." Review them all from "Favorites" in settings.
Leave a note — From "Leave a note" in full view, record how you felt that day. You can choose whether to show it when sharing.
Save in full resolution — Save only the photos you need in full resolution. Videos and Live Photos are large, so they aren't copied by default.
Hide from now on / for today — Photos you'd rather not see can be excluded from full view (hidden within the app; the photo isn't deleted).
Saved filters — The conditions you chose last time carry over to the next launch, so you can start from the same experience.
Notifications later — We don't ask for notifications at first. Enable them from "Notifications" in settings — morning, noon, night, or "only when there's something."
When it's slow — Turn on "Lite mode" in settings. If the app crashed last time, it automatically returns in Lite mode.

Frequently asked questions

Photos I took today don't show up

That's by design. Memory Drop isn't an app for showing photos you took today — it's for revisiting photos from the same month and day in past years, "On This Day." Enjoy going back through this day last year, two years ago, and beyond.

Are my photos sent anywhere?

No. Photos, Live Photos, and videos are read on your device and never sent to external servers. Sharing happens only when you explicitly choose to. See the Privacy Policy for details.

What if there are no photos from this day last year?

We won't just show you an empty screen. We'll suggest next steps like searching earlier years, viewing memories from nearby days, loosening the filters, or watching the demo. When "last year" has zero photos, it automatically expands to earlier years.

Can I use it with limited access (only selected photos)?

Yes. It works with only the photos you've allowed. Use "Add photos" to add more later.

Does "Favorites" sync with the Photos app's favorites?

No. "Favorites" is managed within this app, separate from Apple's Photos app favorites. Normally it only stores the original photo's ID and your notes.

How do I restore an excluded (hidden) photo?

You can undo it from "Reset excluded photos" in settings. Exclusion is just hiding within this app; the photo itself isn't deleted.

Where do the names of people and pets come from?

We don't rely on getting proper names from your photo library. Instead, you assign any name you like within the app. Subtle hints like "looks like a person" or "looks like an animal" come from on-device analysis. The names you assign aren't written back to your photo library.

Are place and landmark labels accurate?

Our approach is not to over-assert. We show gently rounded labels like an area name, "near the aquarium," or "memories around Maihama." We don't assert shop names. You can set it to "area name only" or turn it off in settings.

What if it's slow or unstable?

Turning on "Lite mode" in settings reduces the number of falling photos, effects, and prefetching for lighter operation. If the app crashed last time, it automatically returns in Lite mode next time.

Will I get notifications?

We don't ask for notifications on first launch. From "Notifications" in settings, enable them at your preferred timing — morning, noon, night, or only when there's an "On This Day."
